This comparison intentionally avoids fixed allowances, fees and deadlines because operator policies and product names can change. The conditions displayed for your selected journey are the ones that matter.
What to compare before choosing
1. Exact stations
Read the complete station name at both ends. In cities with several stations, the time and cost of the local transfer may matter more than a small difference in the rail fare. This is especially important when comparing a central station with an airport or outer-city TGV station.
2. Total journey, not only train speed
TGV INOUI and OUIGO Grande Vitesse can use high-speed infrastructure, but the practical journey time depends on stops, routing, station access and any onward connection. Compare door-to-door timing rather than assuming one brand is always faster.
3. Total cost
Compare the final amount shown by the operator after any options you actually need. A base fare may not include every traveller's luggage, seating or flexibility choices, and current availability can change.
4. Fare conditions
Open the conditions before purchase. Check whether and how the fare can be changed or refunded, what happens if you miss the train, and whether the ticket is valid only for the named departure. Avoid relying on a general blog rule for a specific ticket.
5. Luggage, bicycles and pets
These policies can differ between service offers and can change. Verify the number and size of items permitted, any reservation or add-on requirement, and the rules for special items directly with the operator.
6. Boarding and identification
Follow the arrival guidance shown by the operator for the selected train. Leave extra time at an unfamiliar or large station, keep the required travel document available and follow access gates and station announcements.
Onboard expectations
Seat layout, power, connectivity, catering and accessibility facilities can vary by train set and route. If one of these features is essential, verify it for the specific service rather than treating a brand-level description as a guarantee.
Planning checklist
- Confirm the exact origin and destination station names.
- Compare departure time, arrival time, stops and total duration.
- Read the selected fare's exchange and refund conditions.
- Check luggage and special-item allowances.
- Verify passenger assistance and accessibility if required.
- Review current disruption information before leaving for the station.
- Use station displays for the final platform.
Do not confuse OUIGO Grande Vitesse with Train Classique
This high-speed comparison concerns OUIGO Grande Vitesse. OUIGO Train Classique uses conventional services and should not be assigned TGV journey times.
Luggage: a useful domestic TGV reference
For domestic TGV INOUI, the official guidance checked on 11 October 2026 allows up to two labelled bags, each no larger than 70 × 90 × 50 cm, plus one labelled hand bag up to 40 × 30 × 15 cm. You must be able to carry them yourself. Special items and international services can have different rules.
OUIGO includes a cabin bag up to 55 × 35 × 25 cm. Its French and English information pages currently differ on the small hand-bag dimensions. Check the current conditions attached to your booking before packing; do not apply the TGV allowance to OUIGO.
